The 9th IEM-USM Student Section Annual General Meeting has been successfully held on 3rd October 2018 at Seminar Room 3, School of Civil Engineering. The general meeting started at 3.00pm with the welcoming speech by the advisor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lau Tze Liang. It was followed by past event report presented by Cheah Seong Eng, Vice-Chairman II. There are total of 16 events held by IEM-USM Student Section for the Academic Session 2017/2018. Vice-Chairman I, Ooi Liang Shin, then reported the membership status and the financial report was presented by Aloysius Chang Li Wen, Honorary Treasurer. All these reports were accepted and endorsed. Dr. Mohamad Khairi Ishak, new advisor replacing Dr. Muhammad Nasiruddin Mahyuddin also attended the meeting.

IEM-USM Student Section has sent two teams of undergraduate students led by one advisor from the School of Civil Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia from 11^th to 20^th September 2018 to Taiwan. Both teams have achieved encouraging results in the “Introducing and Demonstrating Earthquake Engineering Research for Schools (IDEERS) 2018” which was held on September 14 – 15 in Taipei, Taiwan. This international competition was held at the Taiwan National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE). This program is jointly organized by NCREE, National Applied Research Laboratories (NARLabs) and British Council (BC). Each team was required to construct a building model using the provided materials in 6.5 hours. All models were then tested for various levels of bi-directional earthquake ground motion (from 250 gal to 800 gal; gal = cm/sec²) simulated using a shaking table. 

An introductory talk on IEM was conducted during the orientation week of new intakes for Academic Session 2018/2019. The talk was delivered by two invited speakers from IEM Penang Branch, Prof. Dato’ Ir. Dr. Eric Goh and Ir. Ting Chek Choon and the advisor of IEM-USM Student Section, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lau Tze Liang. The main purpose of this talk is to introduce IEM to new students and to recruit new IEM student member.
