USM Build and Break Competition 2015
The USM Build & Break Competition was successfully organized on 4 April 2015. There were altogether of 15 teams competing where 10 teams were from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and 5 teams were from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).
This competition was organized by IEM-USM Student Section, with the helps from the advisor, Dr. Lau Tze Liang from School of Civil Engineering, Student Affairs & Development Division (BHEPP), Director’s Office and School of Civil Engineering.
“I would say that this is a very unique cooperation and appropriate to be able to establish rapport with the industry and the bodies responsible in the case of engineer in Malaysia”, said Lau.
He added, this competition requires participant’s creativity, innovation, teamwork and delegation of responsibility skills to complete it.
The venue was took place at the Dewan Peperiksaan Baru (DPB), USM Engineering Campus. This competition was sponsored by NS Bluescope Lysaght Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. and M.E.I. Project Engineers Sdn. Bhd.
The participants were given 500 grams worth satay sticks to build a bridge with a minimum clear span of 600 mm within 3 hours and was loaded with loads until the bridge reach maximum deflection and breaks.
The honourable judges for this competition include Ir. Ting Check Choon from IEM Penang Branch, Ir. Wong Tian Seng from M.E.I. Project Engineers Sdn. Bhd. and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Choong Kok Keong from School of Civil Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
Apart from the competition, the gold sponsor for the event, NS Bluescope Lysaght Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. also had their booth at the competition venue. Students were given the opportunities to know more about the company.
Based on the strength, aesthetic, punctuality and presentation, Team Designers with a total score of 94 won the competition and walked away with cash prize of RM500 and certificates.
USM Build and Break Competition 2015 is a beneficial event as it stimulates students creativities to apply the theories taught in the lecture practically.
